**How Much Power Does Your Home Actually Use? Calculate the size of your backup generator.**

When sizing a backup generator for your home, square footage is only a tiny piece of the puzzle. Two similarly sized houses on the same street can have vastly different power needs depending on what’s inside them.

While load calculators are very helpful, they typically oversize a generator for real-world scenarios. The official electrical codes build in massive safety buffers that assume every switch and appliance is turned on at once. As we know, real life works differently. Appliances cycle on and off, lights get flipped off when leaving a room, and modern electronics consume far less energy than older models.

Understanding how your home actually uses electricity is the key to choosing a generator that keeps your family comfortable without paying for capacity you don't need.

**1. The "Base Load": Your Home’s Everyday Baseline**

For a typical 3,000-square-foot home, this normal baseline activity only accounts for about **1.0 to 3.0 kW**. Even if you turned on 30 light bulbs and 5 ceiling fans, you’d likely draw less than 2 kW.

Everyday devices create your home’s baseline power demand. Measured in **kilowatts (kW)**, your baseline covers the background items running nearly 24/7:

- Lighting and ceiling fans
- Refrigerators and deep freezers
- TVs, Wi-Fi routers, and device chargers

**2. The Heavy Lifters: Major Appliances**

Major electric appliances are the main factor in determining your generator size. A single major heating, cooling, or motor-driven appliance generally uses 2x to 3x more energy than every light and ceiling fan in a home. The biggest power draws in any home include:

- Central Air Conditioners
- Electric Water Heaters
- Electric Clothes Dryers & Ovens
- EV Chargers (7.0 – 12.0+ kW)

**3. The AC Spike: Understanding "Starting Load"**

Air conditioners require special attention when sizing a generator. While a central AC unit might only draw **3 – 5 kW while running**, the compressor requires a brief spike of energy—known as **starting load** or surge power—just to turn on. While only for less than a second, this in-rush surge can be equal to, or larger than your running load.

A properly sized generator must handle both the continuous running watts of your home and these temporary starting surges from HVAC units.

**Quick Guide: Common Household Power Draws**

| **30 LED Light Bulbs** | 0.3 kW |
| --- | --- |
| **Central Air Conditioner (running)** | 3 – 5 kW |
| **Central Air Conditioner (in-rush)** | 3 – 8 kW |
| **Electric Water Heater** | 3 – 6 kW |
| **Electric Oven / Range** | 2 – 5 kW |
| **HVAC Blower/Fan** | 1 – 2.5 kW |
| **Electric Heater/Heat Strips** | 5 – 15 kW |
| **Clothes Dryer** | 1.8 – 5 kW |
| **Dishwasher** | 1 – 2.5 kW |
| **Refrigerator** | \< 1 kW |
| **Microwave** | .5 – 1.5 kW |
| **Washing Machine** | \< .5 kW |
| **Television** | \< .5 kW |
| **Coffee Maker** | \< 1.5 kW |

*The above table is an estimate and average appliance wattage. Actual consumption can vary greatly by model and size. See your owner's manuals for actual consumption.*

**Smart Power Management: Load Shedding**

You don't always need a massive, expensive generator to run a large home. Modern backup power systems use **load shed modules**—smart switches that automatically manage heavy appliance demand.

If your generator gets close to full capacity, a load module briefly pauses lower-priority appliances (like a secondary AC unit, second electric water heater) for a few minutes. Once power frees up, it turns them back on. This allows a smaller, more efficient generator to power your entire lifestyle seamlessly.

Due to massive power consumption averaging 10kW, 240v EV fast chargers will almost always be put on a load-shed module. This does not mean you cannot charge your vehicle. It simply means that power will not be supplied to the EV charger if the charger + higher-priority devices push beyond system capacity. During an outage you may need to adjust the charging rate in your vehicle or on your charger (varies by model) or plug the vehicle into a normal/slow charger while on backup power.

**The Bottom Line**

Square footage doesn't power your home, appliances do. Sizing a backup generator requires evaluating your specific HVAC equipment, identifying high-demand appliances, and planning for start-up power spikes. A little common sense goes a long way. Depending on your generator size, appliances, and lifestyle, you may need to postpone baking cookies while you are ironing clothes, drying laundry while your daughter is drying her hair in the dead of summer when two or three AC units are running. Keeping that in mind, you can still lead a very normal life for multiple days on a whole-home backup generator.
