# Generac Schedule A Maintenance: What DFW Generator Owners Need to Know

**What Does the Yellow (Orange) Light on My Generac Mean?** If your Generac standby generator or Mobile Link app displays **“Service Schedule A,”** it means your generator is due for scheduled maintenance, indicated by a yellow/orange light on the generator. Your generator should continue to operate normally, but maintenance should be scheduled as soon as possible to ensure reliable performance. Learn how the [**Guardian Home Generators Gold Shield Maintenance Plan**](https://guardianhomegenerators.com/blog/generator-annual-maintenance-and-service) helps keep your generator ready when you need it most, powering your peace of mind.

## **Service Your Generator Every 12 Months or 100 Operating Hours, Whichever Comes First.**

![Generac-Schedule-A-Service-Warning-SQ](https://guardianhomegenerators.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Generac-Schedule-A-Service-Warning-SQ.png?width=346&height=346&name=Generac-Schedule-A-Service-Warning-SQ.png)  Generac’s Schedule A reminder may be programmed for every two years or 200 operating hours. However, Generac also requires the engine oil and oil filter to be changed every year or 100 operating hours where temperatures frequently go above 85°F.

## **What Does Schedule A Maintenance Include?**

For most Generac air-cooled standby generators, Schedule A includes:

- Replacing the engine oil
- Replacing the oil filter
- Inspecting the battery
- Checking for oil and fuel leaks
- Inspecting for water intrusion
- Checking the enclosure and cooling openings
- Inspecting for corrosion
- Confirming proper generator operation
- Clearing the maintenance reminder after service
- Guardian Home Generators also replaces the spark plugs during Schedule A maintenance. Because they are inexpensive (and come in the official Generac Maintenance Kit). Replacing them provides an added measure of reliability.

## **Why Maintenance Matters Even With Low Run Hours**

A generator does not have to power your home during an outage to require maintenance. It still sits outside throughout the year and runs regular exercise cycles.

During that time, it is exposed to:

- Extreme heat
- Humidity and rain
- Dust and lawn debris
- Corrosion
- Insects and rodents
- Battery deterioration
- Aging electrical connections

Engine oil also degrades with time, temperature, moisture, and repeated short exercise cycles. A generator with very few operating hours can still develop a weak battery, restricted airflow, corrosion, leaks, damaged wiring, or other conditions that prevent it from starting.

## **Is the Yellow Schedule A Light an Emergency?**

A yellow Schedule A light is normally a maintenance reminder, not a generator failure. The generator may still operate during an outage.

However, clearing the reminder does not perform the maintenance. It does not replace the oil, test the battery, inspect the fuel system, or confirm that the generator is ready to power your home.

A red light, fault code, starting problem, unusual noise, or visible leak indicates a condition that may require troubleshooting or repair rather than routine maintenance.

## **Can You Perform Schedule A Maintenance Yourself?**

Many homeowners can perform a basic oil and filter change if they are comfortable working on engines and follow the correct manual for their generator.

You should use the correct oil, filter, procedures, and quantities for your specific model. You should also document the date, operating hours, parts used, and work performed.

The limitation is that a DIY oil change is only part of proper generator maintenance.

## **Guardian Home Generators Does More Than an Oil Change**

Guardian Home Generators specializes exclusively in whole-home standby generators. Our service is intended to evaluate the complete backup power system, not simply change the oil and turn off the yellow light.

Depending on the generator and service level, our maintenance includes:

- Engine oil and filter replacement
- Professional battery diagnostic testing
- Battery terminal and cable inspection
- Fuel and oil leak inspection
- Electrical connection inspection
- Airflow and enclosure inspection
- Corrosion and water-intrusion inspection
- Rodent and insect inspection
- Review of operating hours and controller history
- Generator cleaning inside and outside
- Manual operational testing
- Transfer and load testing when included
- Verification that the generator is returned to AUTO mode
- Maintenance documentation for your records

We also inspect the air filter, spark plugs, valve-clearance requirements, and other service items based on the generator’s model, age, hours, and maintenance history.

These inspections help identify small problems before they become expensive repairs or cause the generator to fail during an outage.

## **Schedule Your Generac Maintenance**

Your standby generator is expected to start automatically, transfer power, and operate in some of the most severe weather North Texas experiences. Its maintenance schedule should reflect those conditions.

Call **214-233-5159** to schedule generator maintenance in Grapevine, Colleyville, Southlake, Keller, Trophy Club, Flower Mound, North Richland Hills, Hurst, Euless, Bedford, Westlake, Northlake, and surrounding North Texas communities.

Proper maintenance is more than an oil change. It is a complete inspection of the system your home depends on when the power goes out.
